We're Back in Action!

Hi Parents!

We've had some technical issues with the blog but I think we've got them figured out and we're on our way!  The kiddos have slid right into the routine of staying in homeroom.  They're a great bunch of kids and they adjust well.   We have a new rascal in our bunch.  I would like to welcome Dustin Mackey to our classroom family!  I also wanted to give you all a heads up about what we're learning in the classroom and where we're heading in the future...........

Math:  We are working on chapter 5, which is multiplication of 2 digit numbers.  The kiddos are learning four different methods to solve these.  So far we've learned FOIL, the regular way, and started partial products.  We will also learn the lattice method later in the week.  They are making great progress and it looks like we'll be testing some time next week.  It is SO important that the kiddos know their basic multiplication facts.  This chapter is extremely hard if they don't.  Here is a website that is great to use to produce your own multiplication worksheets for at home practice:  http://www.themathworksheetsite.com/.  It allows you to input the number of digits too!

Reading:  We started switching for reading today.  This kiddos are focusing on figurative language within their reading groups.  See your child's reading teacher's website for more specifics on what their group is working on.

Writing:  We're focusing on Word Choice!  Last week we wrote winter poems and created stories from our Squiggles.  If you don't know what a Squiggle is be sure to ask your child!  Writing is also integrated through all of the other subjects.  We are continuing to work on the parts of speech.

Social Studies:  We are finished up chapter 6 this week and will be taking our test this Thursday.  In this chapter we learned how Arizona was part of Mexico and how it came to be part of the U.S.  We also learned about the Mountain Men of Arizona.  We even filled out "job applications" to become a Mountain Man/Woman.  These were hilarious to read!  Ask your child what the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago and The Gadsden Purchase are?

Science:  Electricity is our focus in Science.  This is a wonderful hands-on unit.  We've been building simple, series, and parallel circuits.  The kiddos have had to light a bulb and run a motor with wires, a switch, and a D-cell battery.  Ask your child what the difference between an electricity receiver and an electricity source is?  Also, have them diagram how they lit the bulb or ran the motor.  They can do it!  Thanks to tax credit money, Mad Science will be coming in at the beginning of February to do a presentation on electricity!

Kartchner Caverns is a go!  We will be heading to the cave on February 28.  The letter came home today.  Please be sure to fill it out and send it back ASAP.  We have to be paid in full to Kartchner 30 days in advance.  We can't wait to go spelunking!

I've had a bunch of questions about buying a math journal 2 for your child.  This is of course optional, but if you would to purchase one for your child to use during math there are parents who have bought extras because they were on sale for $3.00.  Just let me know if you would like one and I'll let that parent know.

We need help!  Our class is in last place for Milers!  Please come and join us on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  Be sure to put Ronnie down our your card so we get the miles.  You'll get exercise and help the Rascals crawl out of last place!

If you have any questions feel free to give me a call or an email.  Be sure to check the blog on a daily basis.  The kiddos will take over the blogging duties this week.  Here's to a great 2011!
